My advice would be to work in grey or one hue, concentrate on contrast and tonal values initially. Don’t worry too much about colours as these can easily get beginners mired in a swamp of bad decisions.
Effective use of the pathfinder is the best tip I know for getting faster, apart from knowing the default quick keys… Use the pathfinder and a duplicate of the silhouette to remove the overhang of the inner shapes that hang over the silhouettes edge, like a cookie cutter.Using the pen tool draw the main shapes, ie the silhouette.This turns wireframe on and off meaning that you will be able to see your ref layer underneath when drawing shapes on top. When happy with size and position, lock this layer. Double click the layer and check turn images to 50% opacity option (this makes finding your shapes easier).
